{"id":25,"date":"2014-12-30T00:49:46","date_gmt":"2014-12-30T00:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/?p=25"},"modified":"2014-12-30T23:48:40","modified_gmt":"2014-12-30T23:48:40","slug":"why-do-a-backyard-big-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/why-do-a-backyard-big-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do a Backyard Big Year?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/binoculars-small.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-35\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/binoculars-small.jpg?resize=220%2C165\" alt=\"binoculars small\" width=\"220\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;m very excited about my 2015 Backyard Big Year. \u00a0Here are my Top 10 Reasons why I&#8217;m doing a Backyard Big Year&#8211;and perhaps why you might want to do one too!<\/p>\n<p>10) \u00a0<strong>Save gas<\/strong>. \u00a0I can easily drive 15,000 miles in a year just birding my own county. \u00a0Gas prices at the end of December 2014 are dropping, but hey, I&#8217;ve got a daughter heading off to college this year and it might be a good idea to save some of that money! \u00a0Oh yeah, and it&#8217;s probably better for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>9) <strong>Spend time with family.<\/strong> \u00a0Like I said, this year will see some changes at home with the oldest heading off to school. \u00a0If I can spend more time sitting in my yard with my kids, maybe doing some gardening, or having friends over to hang out with, that sounds preferable to chasing around the county trying to see new birds for the year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33\" style=\"width: 631px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-29-at-8.30.08-PM.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-29-at-8.30.08-PM.png?resize=500%2C275\" alt=\"My local county eBird standings. Think of it as hard core birding training. \u00a0I&#8217;m very excited to work on my mad birding skills!<\/p>\n<p>5) <strong>Research.<\/strong> \u00a0There&#8217;s a lot we don&#8217;t know about bird movements and bird migration. \u00a0When do ducks migrate?
