{"id":443,"date":"2015-01-20T10:46:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T10:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/?p=443"},"modified":"2015-01-20T10:46:36","modified_gmt":"2015-01-20T10:46:36","slug":"dog-days-of-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/dog-days-of-january\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog Days of January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1328_2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-444 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1328_2.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"IMG_1328_2\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1328_2.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1328_2.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1328_2.jpg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1328_2.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s been a tough slog the last few weeks, with only 2 new birds since January 2. \u00a0Spending every day with the same 20-30 species, and probably the same individual birds, is a real change of pace for me. \u00a0Normally by this time in January I&#8217;d have over 90 species for the county, and have logged hundreds of miles driving around to look for them all. \u00a0So far this January I&#8217;ve seen 42 species in the yard and a mere dozen or so other species elsewhere in the county. \u00a0It&#8217;s driving me a little crazy waiting for the birds to come to me!<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple eBird reports for the last few days<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/view\/checklist?subID=S21368109\">Jan 16<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/view\/checklist?subID=S21430116\">Jan 17<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/view\/checklist?subID=S21430124\">Jan 19<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To keep myself going, I make sure to get out at least long enough to get my 20 Bird Minimum Daily Requirement. \u00a0I&#8217;m also filling in sound recordings for the audio big year. \u00a0Yesterday I added a recording of a calling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/tufted-titmouse\/\">Tufted Titmouse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has been interesting to watch for Canada Goose movements. \u00a0The last few days have been better for seeing flocks going over my house, so I&#8217;m scanning them for rare geese. \u00a0So far no dice, but it keeps me out looking!<\/p>\n<p>Here are the species I saw in my yard in December, that haven&#8217;t shown up yet in January: \u00a0Cooper&#8217;s Hawk, Merlin, Greater White-fronted Goose (Code 4), Common Raven (Code 3), Common Grackle, Purple Finch (Code 2).<\/p>\n<p>Waterfowl are moving&#8211;with most of the small ponds in the area frozen over, they are accumulating on the reservoirs and different species seem to show up on different days, so I know they are moving in the area. \u00a0How to see or hear them from my yard is the mystery!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a tough slog the last few weeks, with only 2 new birds since January 2. \u00a0Spending every day with the same 20-30 species, and probably the same individual birds, is a real change of pace for me. \u00a0Normally &hellip;
