Documentary shot, heavily cropped.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been watching my feeders for months waiting for a <strong>Common Redpoll<\/strong>. \u00a0Today we were hit by another heavy snowstorm, in which I finally got my first Purple Finches of the year. \u00a0But no redpolls. \u00a0There have been a few reported today in scattered spots around the county, so they are apparently moving around in the storm. \u00a0This was the time to try something new. \u00a0I decided to try <a href=\"http:\/\/birdnote.org\/show\/restoring-bird-colonies-social-attraction\">social attraction<\/a> to see if I could get redpolls to stop in my yard.<\/p>\n<p>I got a recording of a feeding redpoll flock, played it on a loop on my iPad, and stuck a bluetooth speaker broadcasting the recording out near my bird feeders and put more seed on the ground in the snow.<\/p>\n<p>Just over an hour later I heard a <strong>Common Redpoll<\/strong> call as it flew over my <a href=\"http:\/\/oldbird.org\/21c.htm\">OldBird21c microphone<\/a>\u00a0(recording below)!<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-614-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" flew past and landed on the seed I had placed on a small conifer near my sparrow slick. \u00a0It flew before I could grab my camera, but I went upstairs to see if it might be feeding under my feeders (the view from downstairs was obscured by snow banks) and sure enough, there it was feeding on the ground next to the speaker!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_618\" style=\"width: 510px\" minutes. \u00a0But I got a recording, photos, and was able to log it for the Backyard Big Year!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_619\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bluetooth speaker, protected from snowfall by black box with holes in it to allow sound broadcasting<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now I know some folks are opposed to playing tapes to lure in birds. \u00a0But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umich.edu\/~esupdate\/wholeissueoctdec2004\/schlossberg.pdf\">social attraction using audio recordings<\/a> is a legitimate conservation strategy to attract <a href=\"http:\/\/www.audubon.org\/magazine\/september-october-2013\/a-crazy-idea-bring-back-atlantic\">Atlantic Puffins<\/a> to nesting sites, and has been since used to lure in other rare birds to appropriate habitat where they are more prone to stick if they think others of their species are around&#8211;such as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/2002\/07\/new-birds-fall-old-trick\">Black-capped Vireos<\/a> in Texas. \u00a0Purple Martin landlords routinely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purplemartin.org\/update\/DawnsongNew.html\">play martin recordings<\/a>\u00a0to attract them to new colonial housing. \u00a0In my case, maybe redpolls moving around the area could use a little social encouragement to check out my yard and find my feeders. \u00a0The bird got a quick meal, I got the bird for my annual yard list. \u00a0It&#8217;s all good. \u00a0Right?<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the other birds seemed to avoid the feeders while the recording was running&#8211;preferring to stay over by the food at the sparrow slick. \u00a0After I turned off the recording, the American Goldfinches and Pine Siskins returned to the feeding station. \u00a0Hmmmm. \u00a0Wonder what is up with
