{"id":91,"date":"2015-01-01T23:29:42","date_gmt":"2015-01-01T23:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/?p=91"},"modified":"2015-01-08T03:37:02","modified_gmt":"2015-01-08T03:37:02","slug":"1-jan-2015-report-day-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/1-jan-2015-report-day-1\/","title":{"rendered":"1 Jan 2015 Report (Day 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1235_2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-93 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1235_2.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"IMG_1235_2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1235_2.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1235_2.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_1235_2.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>A long day, a big day, to kick off the year! \u00a0I started by owling for a few moments after getting back from a New Years Eve party. \u00a0Fortunately an <strong>Eastern Screech Owl<\/strong> responded to a tape in the backyard, so it becomes the first bird of the 2015 Backyard Big Year! \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/view\/checklist?subID=S21107369\">See eBird checklist here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I went to bed but only slept for an hour before waking up at 3:30am. \u00a0After over an hour of trying to get back to sleep I just flicked it in and came downstairs to listen to the OldBird 21c microphone. \u00a0It was pretty quiet. \u00a0Just after 5:30 I went out and tried to call up a Northern Saw-whet Owl, to no avail. \u00a0The sky started getting lighter and lighter, and the first bird of the morning&#8211;a <strong>White-throated Sparrow<\/strong>&#8211;called at 6:50am.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_94\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSCN8670-Version-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94\" class=\"wp-image-94 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSCN8670-Version-2.jpg?resize=500%2C208\" alt=\"DSCN8670 - Version 2\" width=\"500\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSCN8670-Version-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C427&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSCN8670-Version-2.jpg?resize=300%2C125&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSCN8670-Version-2.jpg?resize=800%2C333&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.backyardbigyear.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSCN8670-Version-2.jpg?w=1500 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-94\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers spent over an hour working the woods in my west side yard this morning.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Highights of the morning catching the morning gull exodus from Spruce Run. \u00a0Over 10,000 gulls streamed out in a \u00a0constant stream heading west from 7:45am until around 9am. \u00a0In the flock, which was super far away (over two miles) I was able to distinguish larger and smaller birds (<strong>Herring Gulls<\/strong> and <strong>Ring-billed Gulls<\/strong>). \u00a0I saw one (new for the yard list&#8211;Code 4) and 30 Lesser Black-backed Gulls in the haze and early morning light. \u00a0Most gulls were just too far to do much with.<\/p>\n<p>After the gulls had gone through, I continued to scan the hills to the north and was rewarded with some quick very distant flybys of a Gadwall pair and a single <strong>American Black Duck<\/strong>&#8211;both new for the yard list (Code 3). (<a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/view\/checklist?subID=S21122892\">see morning eBird checklist here)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon was pretty dead, I spent a lot of time scanning to the north but didn&#8217;t find anything new. \u00a0I did decide that 2 of the many chickadees in my yard show all of the characteristics of <strong>Carolina Chickadee<\/strong>, so that was the last new bird for the year. \u00a0I ended the day with 36 species&#8211;exceeding my 30 species goal. \u00a0I&#8217;m very excited about the prospects of seeing waterfowl flying to the north, though I only have a very small visual field\u00a0in that direction through trees and over my neighbor&#8217;s roof! That was my window onto a huge gull movement.
